What the Purity Test is

The Purity Test is a 30-question checklist about things you have personally done. It starts with the kind of small dishonesty that barely registers, and works its way toward the things people do not usually say out loud. Every question is about a choice you made yourself — not something that happened to you, and not something someone else did.

You answer yes, no, or “prefer not to answer”. At the end you get a purity score from 0 to 100 and a written interpretation of the pattern in your answers.

How the score works

Every yes adds impurity points. Every no adds nothing. The score is the share of available points you did not collect, so a completely clean run lands at 100% and a full sheet of yeses lands at 0%.

Not every question is worth the same. The questions get heavier as the test goes on, which is why two people who both answered yes ten times can end up with very different scores. Where your yeses sit matters more than how many there are.

Skipping does not count against you

“Prefer not to answer” is not a quiet yes and it is not a quiet no. A skipped question is removed from your total entirely, so it can neither raise nor lower your score — it simply stops being part of the calculation. Skip as many as you like. If you skip nearly everything, there is nothing left to measure and the test will tell you so instead of inventing a number.

The six stages

The test moves through six stages. You can always see which one you are in, so the escalation is never a surprise.

  1. Warm-up1–5
  2. Getting personal6–10
  3. Personal11–15
  4. Intense16–20
  5. Hard21–25
  6. Extreme26–30

How to read your result

The number is the headline, but the interpretation underneath it is the interesting part. It is built from which categories your yeses fall into — how much of your score comes from dishonesty versus risk versus secrecy, and whether the heaviest questions at the end came back clean. Two people can share a percentage and still get a noticeably different read.

A low score is not a verdict on you as a person, and a high one is not a prize. It is a game about a specific list of behaviors, and the list is not the whole of anyone. The purity score guide goes into how to read the number properly, and you can see all the profiles a score can land on.
